make sure your media player is the latest version - 11. this series supports alot of formats (.mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .mpe, .mpv2, .m3u) even if you don't get that- versions 7, xp, 9 or 10 might play it.

MP3 files should play without downloading anything for Windows Media Player. It's possible the MP3 file is corrupted or the file is not actually an MP3 (that was just renamed). Your best bet is to try downloading or copying it again.
If it's not an MP3, it might be a video file. Try changing the extension to AVI. If you still need a codec, try DivX. It's by far the most common.

you can play mp3 files in media player but you need to have codecs to decode mp3 files to be played.....try limewire, kazaa, etc (be careful!)

Yes try right clicking the mp3 and select open with WMP this usually cures the problem when it's happened to me

have you tried right clicking and choseing play from selection
it may be because you have a differnt defalt music player.
