If your daugher is under 15, she should have a Desktop....

But she is talking about a Tablet PC.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

They are called: tablet PCs or better yet, a Convertible tablet notebook. And I absolutely love tablet PCs.They are a load of fun and have much application. But you're probably looking at least $1000 at a low end tablet. They can be as expensive as $2000.
So let me help you out a little. You need to ask yourself a few question before you buy one. (Because you can buy a better notebook that isn't a tablet, at a better value/price.)

1. What size of screen do you want/is mobility important?

They come in multiple sizes, from larger 15" to smaller 11". Alot are designed to be held in one arm like a paper notebook. They also tend to be pretty heavy, a 14" inch gateway tablet weighed in about 7-8 pounds... That doesn't sound like alot, but it gets heavy after you lug it around all day. Most notebooks weigh about 5-6 pounds.

2. What kind of preforming does she want/ what programs will she run?

You can get a convertible/tablet notebook that can be very powerfully and have a decent battery life. If you want something that can run alot of art and alot of graphic design, get at least
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo t5500, 1GB Ram.

I love the tablet PCs, but i would never buy one, unless I was a graphic designer on the road with no desk. Or a real estate agent. I like to draw and make computer graphics, and i felt that the tablets are good for taking notes, but a Wacom tablet (www.wacom.com ) is much better for drawing. Generally, the Wacom pen tablet will work on any computer/laptop. Plus it gives you more creative control and better sensitivity. And most are touch sensitive, so you can draw dark deep lines or soft strokes.
This way you can get a great well priced notebook and spend anywhere from $100- 300 more and get the Wacom tablet, that should really make your daughter happy.

Special note: If you get a tablet PC, please, please i beg of you get an extended warranty. I always recommend it on notebooks, but I beg of you to get it on a tablet PC. Generally because if you get the convertible type where the screen swivels, the hing well most likely break after while, especially if you daughter isn't carefully enough.

They are called Tablet PCs. Hewlett-Packard makes some good ones: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/321957-304452-306995-304455-306995.html

You don't say how old your daughter is and what she wants to do with such a device. She actually may want a graphics tablet like those by Wacom: http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/index.cfm

Always find out what the main use will be before buying the technology.
