Pointy at one end and a handle on the other - kind of like a sword, really!

Excalibur dates in legend and history back to the 500's. (Sixth century A.D.) Southern Britain was still Romanized at that time, and although the Legions had left the island, many Roman "citizens" remained behind, perhaps married men or landholders, minor nobles and such. Whoever Arthur was, he would have wielded a sword influenced by both Roman and Celtic sources. The short Roman gladius would have been impractical for a leader who used calvary, but a longer spatha would have been ideal, perhaps one with a slightly flaring blade similar to the Celtic leaf style, which concentrated weight out towards the tip, greatly increasing its shearing power. In either case the sword would have had a softer iron core, spiral-welded in a Damascus style, (Roman smiths at that time knew nothing about Japanese-style metal folding technique) with a harder tack-welded steel edge. Such blades have enough spring to resist breakage yet do not lose their edge as quickly as simple iron blades do. Add in Arthurs' obvious battle prowess, and the concept that he probably wore a cuirass of Roman lorica segmentata, and the fact that Saxon and Pictish armor was mostly an affair of hide, leather, and chain, and you get a "legendary" sword capable of "cleaving thru anything." At least that's the way it seemed to Arthur's enemies.

I think Excalibur is Welsh and about 1100's. I would research weapons from this area of time and place and make it a little fancier. It was a sacred blade so it would be more elegant. I imagine it with celtic scrollwork on the blade but looking simple from a distance-no jewels etc.

Excalibur is the sword of swords. The sword by which every man strives to. It is a symbol of the hope of men, the strength of an arm and the power of a king of men. It makes all others dull in comparison. With gold filigree in the handle and intricate engraving along the blade. A crest at the butt of the handle and it's name and it's king at the butt of the blade. Celtic knots and birds as well as wolves symbolize luck, good will, and bravery. King Arthur was the only one true enough to wield this sword.

everyone seems to think Excalibur would be so elaborate platnium weapon of celtic elvin design.

Personally for the time relevance and the idea of detail at that point in time, I would think Excalibur would be steel when steel didn't exist or folded 500 times like a japanese katana some awesome technology for a thousand years ago. I imagine it would be plain and boring to look at, not the weapon of legend that Disney makes it out to be.

A sword done by the most gifted crafts men, The gold hilt would swirl and give the users' hand protection from a hit. The blade would be sharp and of the best steal, better than the metal used in Toledo, Spain for the blade. so sharp it can cut at just a touch.

It's really long and shiny. It also has rubies on the handle. The handle is made of gold.
