I'm having a fight with my parents who also think that 5 rounds down to 0, which it doesn't it rounds up to 10. They think that 2 spaces come after a period, I know that there's only one, I feel that with the vote outwayed with all of us against them that they'll realise that they're wrong and can't admit it.

Two spaces after a period and yes, 5 does round to ten. Interesting things to fight with you parents about.

The rule when I took a journalism class in 1996 was that you use two spaces. However, there were times when you would use one. This was mainly due to the fact that typewriters were first.

It seems, now, that people are opting to slowly go back to moving one space after a period. Mainly, because fonts can handle a period proportionally so that you can easily distinguish the start of a new sentence.

In summary, do how many it takes so that you can look at a paragraph and easily see the start of each sentence. Doing something like this wouldn't be appropriate. As you can see.Where is the start of the new sentence. The End.

As for the rounding up on the 5 to 10. You are half correct. Initially, you learn that 5 rounds to 10. In future science classes you will learn that 5 can actually round down to 0 depending on the previous number.

In most writing styles nowadays, only one space follows a period. Until recently, it was taught that there should be two, but this is an old-fashioned perspective. We no longer need the second space to distinguish sentences (older word processing programs and machines required that second space after a period for clarity - modern computers make the space more clear).

Your parents were likely taught that two spaces follow a period. When I was in high school, I was taught the same way. In fact, this is the first year of school (my second year of graduate school) that my instructors have required only one space, but that is the way it is now. You are correct.

Approx-i-mately 27 days should come after a period. that's if your measuring time the way women do. If your measuring proper grammar (i.e. typing) then 2 spaces should come after a period in a sentence. You're right, 5 rounds up to ten.

Maybe this will help explain the quandry (as well as reveal a generation gap!)

"The current opinion is that one space should be typed after any punctuation. Many of us learned in typing class that two spaces should be typed after a period. This convention was used because of nature of the fixed font of typewriters. Computers, however, usually use proportional fonts and justification, which create the proper white space between sentences automatically when one space is typed."

It seems you are both right!

Depends on where you learned to type. I only use one space after a period, as that's what I was taught, however some schools of thought say the correct amount is two.

And yes, 5 does round up to ten.

Old answer is 2 after a period, new is one. There are many changes that are coming given that no type is now set instead it is all done by computers (e.g. the underline was used to tell the typsetter to make it italic - hence new APA does away with underline). 5 does go up to 10.
