The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Running a Successful Construction Company by David Gerstel
* Smart Business for Contractors: A Guide to Money and the Law by Jim Kramon
* How to Succeed With Your Own Construction Business by Stephen Diller
* Construction Forms and Contracts by Craig Savage

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Start out working for someone else's company. You will learn the business from them. Pay attention to how the jobs are done, where the customers are and how to do the work. 2 years of this should do.

Then start doing work on the weekend's for your self. Ramp up your customer base and then go out on your own.

Be aware most states require contractor licensing. You can do work with out it but if someone doesn't pay you, you will have no recourse since you are not licensed.

Good luck!

First and foremost get a contractors license. Secondly devise a business plan as you are probably going to require capital from a bank. Thirdly make sure that you and your crew know what you are doing as there are too many shotty contractors out there and you are only as good as your last job. Get a business coach that specializes in working with entrepreneurs. They can be a great asset to you as you are beginning building your enterprise. Good luck.

Perseverance. Keep doing the flyer factor and do a well activity and phrase of mouth will maintain you busy. Try going in with production firms to wash new residences as soon as they're developed.
