My guess is water quality. You just added a lot of fish, and that could have stressed out your old fish. When a fish becomes stressed, it will often lay at the bottom of the tank and look "sick". When this happens, the fish is more prone to disease and water quality factors. Have your water tested for ammonia and nitrifying bacteria. Once the problem has been taken identified you will know how to treat it.
Good Luck!

Is it in a tropical (heated) tank? Goldfish require cooler water temps than tropicals. Do you do regular water changes with dechlorinated water? This should be done weekly since uneaten food rots in the tank and fish do pee so the ammonia builds up and aften causes the "gasping" you describe.

I had a goldfish do that once, and it was the water that did it. I used tap water and used all the drops in it to remove the chemicals, but it wasn't good enough. I went out and bought a gallon bottle of Spring Water (about 70 cents) and put him in that, and he perked right back up. Might be worth a shot to try if you're using tap water right now.

I agree with the others. It may not make it, and you should ATLEAST quarentine it. I recommend taking it the your local pet shop. They should be able to help. If you think it is suffering, and know it will die, then place it in the barrel of a shot gun, and videotape the "World's First Fish Cannonball", then upload it to U-Tube so that you can get famous! Good luck!

water quality, temperature and aeration are all important. All the other fish are fine did you check to see if there is a piece of gravel caught in its throat??? I don't know the size of your fish (bigger goldfish types suck up the rocks and spit them back out) if you can carefully catch it and see into its mouth you can take your finger carefully under its mouth and move it up and they will continue to try to push it out eventually it will pop out.
Be careful...you dont want them out of the water and you dont want to take all their slime coat off with your hands!
I have done this on my moors and fancy goldfish then bought a new tank and filled it with bigger gravel!
Good Luck!

sounds like it may be his time to go, maybe put him into a separate bowl in case of any fish contamination, if he looks better tomorrow or the next day you can always move him back in.
