12-x=8x-42
12=9x-42
54=9xx=6
1)add x to both sides, you want the same terms on the same side
2)add 42 to both sides, you add the x and the 42 because that's the opp. of -
3)divide 54 by 9 because now you want to get the x by itself, seeing as how your solving for that

12 - x = 8x - 42
Add x to each side
12 -x + x = 8x - 42
Add 42 from bothsides
12 + 42 -x + x = 8x - 42 + 42
54 = 8X
divide both sides by 9
54/9 = 9x/9
x = 54/9 = 6

12-x=8x-42
+x +x Cancel out negative x by making it positive. Then adding to x on other side.
12=9x-42
+42 +42 Do the same to 42.
54/9=9/9x Divide by 9 to get x by itself.
x=6

the steps I do are in ( ) on both sides
12 - x (+ x) = 8x - 42 (+x) add x to both sides which leaves:
12 = (8+1)x - 42
12 = 9x - 42
12 (+42) = 9x - 42 (+42) leaving:
54 = 9x
54(/9) = 9x(/9)
54/9 = x = 6
