I'm looking for inspiration to write a novel or maybe just a short story. Everytime I try to start writing, for some reason it dosen't feel right, like there's no inspiration left and everything I write sounds all wrong and in lack of better words, stupid, I have a feeling it's my house I don't feel very comforatble writing something personal with my family around, I am really in need for some help.

A good start for me was to write an autobiography. I didn't have to be too creative and it got me in the habit of writing. You don't even have to write your entire life's story, just put some memories down on paper if you'd like. Or keep a journal.

I had a similar problem when I tried creative writing, so I bought the Complete Idiot's Guide to Creative Writing. It has some great exercises that really helped me a lot.

Good luck!

Okay, first off i haven't written any books, but i do write a lot of poetry, yeah i know the from the picture you wouldnt think so lol, but the first thing you have to do, is decide on a theme, best to make it something you know about and enjoy, that way you dont have to do a lot of research, as in all stories there should be a beginning a middle and an end, but here's the trick, you dont necessarily have to write them in that order, think how you want the story to end and work backwards from there, get your characters in your mind before you start to write, list them on a notepad with a 1 to 10 rating on their order of importance. One of the easiest things for you to write about, is you, write your earliest memories down and then expand on them, and take the story of your life up to date, you may think you have a boring life, but doing this will get you into the flow of writing, once you have done that you will find it easier to write about other subjects. Also you said you would find it hard to write in your house, well go to a library or a quiet cafe, take your notepad and just write, then fill in the spaces when you get home, good luck and if you really want to do it, you will succeed.
P.S. here's a theme for you, a small boy in elementary school who is bullied, and does something special to become the hero of the day.

I write all the time, mostly here at my computer I've written about 45 stories and that's just on my computer. The longest one is about 12 pages. I write when I feel like it, when I have an idea, or when I'm bored.

It was hard at first for me to do this, but that's before I learned how to type. I used to write it all on paper, but now I'm ten-times better. I'm getting a lot more out of my writting, and also it's easier when no ones in the same room. (The computers in the playroom.)

So just find your special spot, your room, outside, on the computer, paper, whatever. Just write and see what happens, if you don't feel right about. Stop and go on, don't throw away the whole idea though.

Good Luck with your Book! ; )

Write. Even if you think it's sounds wrong or stupid or uninspired, write. The key is to keep writing, no matter what. Eventually you come to a place where things start to flow naturally and the words come a bit easier.
Keep in mind: You can always go back and rewrite the crappy, wrong, stupid, uninspired parts.
An excellent book I'd recommend is "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott. She addresses the issues you're talking about here, which apparently are the same issues that most writers face (in other words it probably has nothing to do with writing something personal around your family :) )
Good luck.

I love to wright as well, and when i am in a fix i just think about what makes me smile or what i would like to read. Then i wright down my ideas as they come leaving space in between in case i come up with a new idea or something to add. And if you dont feel comfortable writing around your family about personal things go hang with your pals and wright about what you did in a journal then a month later go back and wright a story on your events using another character as yourself and friends. That way you will have the spark and the all ready written ideas. But then again if that isn't your thing then forget what ever crap i said. Remember, writing should be about what you want , not others.

One of the hardest things I had to learn when I began working in a newsroom, was writing when other people were around and could look at what I was doing. Writing is a very private act and until you are very sure of yourself, it is difficult to write with family around, unless you have some private place to work. If you can't find the privacy you need at your homework desk in your bedroom, try visiting the library. There are lots of private little corners you can use there to sit and think about your writing, without having to explain what you are doing to everyone who walks by.

If you don't feel compfortable writing at home go somewhere else. When I'm writing stories, I go to Borders or Panera Bread. Less chance of people wanting to read over your shoulder and less interruptions.

In terms of looking for inspiration look to your life or the life of someone you know. The words will probably come if you're completely undistracted. Don't worry about it not sounding right. Find someone else to read it or edit it after you've written something.

If you need someone to read something you wrote you can always email it to me. ritabtoll@yahoo.com.

No offense, but maybe your gift is NOT writing.

Not everyone was born to write.

As any teacher will tell you, if you want to write it's best to write what you know about.

I want to sing..but I have to be honest, I couldn't carry a tune if it were strapped to me.

But, if you truly feel the 'desire to write', go for it! Even if it means getting away from familiar surroundings till it's finished.

But if it feels uncomfortable for you to write with family/friends around, how will you deal with it once it hits the bookshelves for ALL OF THE WORLD TO SEE (READ)?

Ya gotta think about these things if you really want to be a writer...good luck!!!
