Imagine there is a third sex, one that is attractive to both male and female and is necessary for recreational sex and procreation. What effect would it have on relationships, families and society as a whole?

Well, we'd all be having a lot of threesomes ... if you wanted to get married and have children that is.
Anyone who just wanted to have sex with a man or a woman with no third person involved would be a deviant and have to stay in the closet, until they started demanding Duosexual Rights.
You writing a sci-fi novel or something?

Third-sexism was in fashion about 1632 in England. The fad didn't last long and the practice was baned by Act of Parliament in 1708. However, the House of Lords were in sympathy with the idea and tried to reverse the Act so to speak. They did not succeed but instead managed to have a county named after it.... hence Middlesex. Recently the Government did away with Middlesex because it was too near the airport (Heath Row) and too many American Tourists were getting confused taking their rental-cars back. Apparently, after a trip to the loo, many of the visitors were frequently spotted wearing their pants back-to-front and missing their flights home.
