Since the Soviet Union/Russia never landed a man on the moon, I think it's unlikely they would have tried for Mars on their own, especially given the drain on their economy. Had the USSR had the ability and made the move to send a man to Mars, I suspect the US would have kept on with its program. Hopefully, Russian and the US (and other nations, for that matter) will manage to do it within my lifetime :-)

Probably, but only probably, not definitely. After all, Russia (and Europe) built a supersonic airliner, and at first the US started to build one, but decided it was not worth it and dropped the whole project. In the end, the Russian SST was a failure and Concorde, although it did enter commercial service, never made money and was retired a few years ago. So I am pretty sure the US would have started a Mars project, but probably would not have followed through after seeing the cost.

great question.

well despite not knowing everything that was going on we had good intel in the ussr. im sure we knew enough to know that they couldnt do it, even if they had attempted to. so with no risk of them doing it we probably would not have. however if they had been to a point where they could then yes we probably would have.
