A linear array is a vector. A rectangular array is a matrix. Furthermore a vector is a specialized type of matrix just as a square is a specialized type of rectangle. In any event, the easiest way to solve a system of equations (other than using a computer directly) is to get the matrix into "Reduced Row Echelon Form" Most graphing calculators even have this function. It's called RREF in the TI-89 and similar TI calculators.
