The Seattle Pilots were the team in 1969 - and their mere existence spawned a book that forever changed the way sports were written about - Ball Four by Jim Bouton - one of the BEST sports book ever.

Although, Seattle could have had another team before the Mariners came into existence ...would you believe the Seattle White Sox?
