I am interested in purchasing a new, used car. My budget is $5,000 to $12,000. Which automobile naming the make, model, and year(s) would give me the most horsepower for the dollar? When I refer to horsepower, I really mean that 0-60 oomph.

Please note, I do not do any work on cars. So, if you suggest an engine swap, please consider the cost of hiring a professional to keep things within my budget.

You could pick up a 77-81 Camaro for about a grand. If you spend $5000-$6000 on a crate engine from GM Performance parts, you could get a 502cid putting out about 640-660hp. Spend about 1500 on a 400 tranny and the rest on the suspension, and some meaty shoes, cause 660hp will light 'em up.

1987-1993 ford mustang LX 5.0 5 speed -depending on condition you can pick up good examples for under 5000 and these are cars that do 0-60 in 7-8 seconds -by far best bang for buck ! I bought a nice 4cyl 88 hatchback and put in a 347 stroker ,the beauty of these cars is anything up to and including the 460 will BOLT IN!
