How can I know if my turtle is male or female??? I want to know now, do not want to go to the pet shop, too far from home. It is a water turtle, one of those that have red around the eyes. I do not see anyting "down there" that indicates the sex.

Your's is a Red-ear slider. You cannot accurately tell the sex until it is about 4" long. At that time, look for these characteristics:

Males have an in-curved belly, long skinny tail, and really long front claws. They are also usually smaller and more colorful- but that only helps in a crowd.

Females have flat or out curved bellies and short wide tails. They will usually be bigger and less colorful- but again not a real helpful technique without something to compare to.

The male sex organs of the turtle are actually inside the tail, so they are difficult to see. Sometimes in water they will actually be pressed out and cleaned, but you would have to be around to notice this. Turtles typically don't flash their owners. Also, the male turtle's tail is considerably longer thant he female's. If the turtle is sitting flat and you are above and can see a good portion of its tail, it's probably a male. A female's tail barely protrudes beyond the shell. Also, the male usually has red eyes. However, the knowledge I have is of american box turtles, so I'm not 100% sure if all turtles are the same.

Am no expert but when I had turtles I was told to look for two things. One, the width of the tail, male turtles have a wider tail than females. The second method involves the cloacal opening. The cloacal opening of the female is closer to the base of the tail.

When they are mature, males will have very, very long claws and a long tail. Females have shorter nails and a shorter tail. However, unless you have an early bloomer male, you can't be certain until they are full grown, which useually happenes at around 3-5 years of age.

I have a male and a female, and when you compare them, it's really obvious...especially when he started to...ummm..."Date?" her:)

also, the female's shell will be flat on the bottom and the male will have a bump to help him not slide off her shell.
