A cactus is a desert plant with spines growing out of it. In cartoons and comics, if the artist wants to emphasize that there is little water in the region, he may draw a cactus or two in the background. The usual cartoon cactus is a cucumber-like shape growing out of the ground, with two cucumber-shaped "arms" which bend so that they are mostly parallel to the center cucumber-like shape.

Look up "saguaro" in your favorite search engine, and you should get a picture of one of these. ("Saguaro" refers to a type of cactus which does have the center-stalk/outside-arm structure. Another type of cactus is called "prickly pear.")
