This is what I found when I went searching...

"At Gatorade headquarters, it's known simply as The Dunk.

It represents the moment in 1985 when New York Giant defensive tackle Jim Burt and linebacker Harry Carson crept up behind Bill Parcells in the final moments of a victory over Washington and drenched him with a cooler of the drink."

In 1985, Jim Burt, who played for the New York Giants, was the first football player to dump a cooler of Gatorade on a coach when he drenched Bill Parcells. It wasn't until 1989 when a coach retaliated. Steve Spurrier, coach at the University of Florida, crept up behind three unsuspecting players who had doused him the week before and promptly dumped a cooler of Gatorade on them. Whether football players are drinking it or pouring it over their coach's head in a victory celebration, the pale-green Gatorade will probably be part of the football scene for years to come.

Ummm! I don't know about that guys story but I believe that tradition began when Colonel Mustard's son won his first collegiate football game in Ireland as the head coach. Of course the sport was known as rugby at the time. But the legend goes that Mustard secretly resented his son and his success so he stayed up late one night researching the Internet for a way to murder his son without suspicion. He found that icy cold ice and water in some cases could stop a person's heart killing them instantly. And so the story goes - he filled up two Igloo chests with ice and Gatorade (because water sucks) and arranged with a couple of bench-warmers to dump the concoction over his son's head as a celebratory act should the team win. Well, the team of course went on to win and the two bench guys grabbed the Igloo chests but one of them tripped and spilled the Gatorade on the ground among the extension cords where Mustard was standing. At the very second that Mustard's son was drenched with Icy cold Gatorade, Mustard himself was shocked to death. Of course the Internet was completely wrong about the ice water and Mustard's son went on to win the Govna's Cup that year. Some attribute his success to the Gatorade shower, so every time a team wins the coach gets the same shower. And that's all I have to say about that.
