Well, here are some real winners in my mind for young adult books, the kinds that I absolutely loved when I was younger:

1) Crooked by Laura Mcneal- a really good book about the escalation of violence and teen life problems. I just remember really, really liking it.

2) Leaving Fishers by Margaret Peterson Haddix- if you think that you know everything about cults, or it would be boring to read about them, you're wrong. This book amazed and gripped me.

3) You Don't Know Me by David Klass- utter, sheer brilliance. Some people might not like Klass' style, but the book is wry, humorous, ironic, sweet, and completely beautiful, about a boy trying to find his place in life. You just have to read it.

4) Shadow by Joyce Sweeney- a girl starts seeing the ghost of her dead cat and can't figure out why . . . as the plot twists up to an amazing, tumultuous climax that you should have seen coming but really didn't. Simple premise, but fantastic.

5) How I Paid for College by Mark Acito- the funniest, funniest, funniest book I've ever read. It can be slightly on the raunchy side (sexually), but it's just hilarious, sweet, and really, really good.

6) Snake Dreamer by Priscilla Galloway- a cool book about a girl who goes on a trip to Greece only to realize that there are dark secrets about the women she's staying with- very atmospheric and mysterious.

7) Kissing Doorknobs by Terry Spencer Hesser and A.J. Allen- a beautiful portrayal of a girl with obsessive compulsive disorder. Really good!

8) Anything by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. I particularly loved her Alice series (still going strong!), which was really funny and sweet, and her Witch series, which are fantastic books about a girl who has an evil witch living next door- dealt with seriously and in a very dark, scary way that's not patronizing.

9) The China Garden by Liz Berry- a very atmospheric, gorgeous book about a girl who goes with her mother to England, to stay as a live-in helper for a mysterious old man and his estate. It's romantic and mysterious and just really, really good. My mom even loved it.

10) The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan- one of the best, sweetest colonial-era books I've ever read. About a deaf boy in those times and the awful things he has to undergo. Sad, sweet, redeeming. Really touched me.

Well, I could go on and on about the books I love! Those are some ones to check out, and some others you might look into are:

The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, So You Want To Be a Wizard, War for the Oaks, The Broke Diaries, certain stuff by Francesca Lia Block- like Dangerous Angels, and Girl Goddess #9, The Giver, Speak, Annie On My Mind, The Year They Burned the Books, Book Bat, some of Caroline B. Cooney's stuff like The Truth About Janie and its sequels, and the Out of Time books about Strat and Annie, the Artemis Fowl series, The Silver Kiss, Come to Me By Moonlight, Cut, Asylum for Nightface, The Woman in the Wall, Owl in Love, Beginner's Luck, Wither, Rats Saw God, Rules of the Road, Johnny Voodoo, Babylon Boyz, Tenderness, I Want to Buy a Vowel, Hidden Talents, Confess-O-Rama, Things Not Seen, The Tiger Orchard, Spirit Window, Hangman's Tale, Nightmare Academy, Stephen Fair, How I Spent My Last Day on Earth, and so on.

Happy reading!

If you like Harry Potter I'd suggest a book called "Justin Thyme". I first heard about this book when I read a review of it on the big Harry Potter web site "Mugglenet" which recommended it, saying it would appeal to anyone who enjoys Harry Potter:
http://www.mugglenet.com/booktrolley/oxridgep-justin.shtml (beware annoying pop-ups)

The story includes: the Loch Ness Monster, a teenage billionaire, a mysterious Scottish Laird, a celebrity cryptozoologist, a computer-literate gorilla, a Shakespearean gardener, a gigantic bald woman, and an eight-legged cat! I found it fascinating - the theories about the nature of time itself, and trails of hidden cryptic clues embedded into the text. Even the identity of the author is concealed somewhere in the book, and I find myself continually being drawn back to it, hoping to discover just one more clue!

If you want to check out the book on Amazon click here:

Go to Amazon.com and search:
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1" - Book 2 is going to be out in the next 6 weeks or so, Book 3 is written and in editing and will be out sometime in the next few months.
"Death by MURDER David Lindsay" - you have to search that way or it won't come up. There's lots of sex in that one.
"Super Spaghetti"
And the best part is, for now, they're all FREE. You can read them with Kindle Unlimited - if you don't have Kindle Unlimited Google how to get a free trial, and all those books are free. They can be read online, with a free Kindle phone app, or on a Kindle.

Green Rider by Kristen Britain
It's about a girl who runs away from school. On her way home, she comes across a dying messenger who asks her to carry his message to the king. On her way to the king, she has several exciting side adventures and meets some interesting people.
It's a great book and one of my favorites. There's also a sequel called First Rider's Call and a third book is on the way.

Books by Sarah Dessen

http://www.sarahdessen.com/
Book summaries are on this site. I loved reading them in high school.

They are kind of similar to the traveling pants books (I loved those too!)

If you have ever seen the movie How To Deal (with Mandy Moore), it is based on Dessen's books Someone Like You and That Summer
