The short answer is that medical schools usually look at which classes you take in college, not high school; usually they assume you had a general 'college prep' curriculum. That said, the following classes may prove useful (many are required to some extent anyway):

* Biology - including, if possible, human anatomy & physiology - not enough for med school but a good introduction
* Chemistry - if your school offers organic chemistry so much the better, but most have only inorganic
* Math - *AT LEAST* as far as trigonometry and preferably calculus. And you'd better be good at algebra, you'll be using it.
* Most high schools require a foreign language; Spanish is a practical choice because so many patients today speak it, but Latin is useful for deciphering medical terms. If you're ambitious, do both.
* Physics - it may seem odd but it does come into play in medicine
* Writing (usually listed as an English class) - technical and expository writing are useful in any technical field
* If available, Logic (usually listed under Philosophy) is extremely useful. So is Public Speaking.

Be thinking about how to get into advanced science classes in your junior and senior years and doing well in these courses. Also be looking to get a good foundation in other subjects as well as extra curricular activites (think about science clubs and science fairs). This will help you get into a better college which should help you get into a good med school. It is both about taking the right courses but also making sure you can get into med school (which is very competitive).

You want to make sure you are heavy on the science, especially biology and math side, but try to stay as well rounded as the curriculum allows.

Check to see if you can take any classes online ... my son took his health class and social studies online to allow more elective options during the day.

You want to take as advanced of a class as you think you can while maintaining good grades.

Don't forget your fine arts.

best,

cez

Med schools won't care what you did in high school. Take the courses you're interested in, especially any in the sciences. You'll be well-prepared for your undergraduate degree/admissions.

Talk to your guidence counseler. They usually have a good idea as to what types of courses you should take. The nomal are your Bios, Chems, Physics, Calc. Try to take the AP version if your school has such. Good Luck!
