What do you do when someone is ill treating a person spreading gossips and malicious rumours?

The person needs to report it to their supervisor. Make sure she has her facts correct first, though. She doesn't want to end up being accused of malicious gossip herself.

Tell the person to locate his/her company's HR policies on work harrassment and follow the steps adviced. However, many of these harrassment docs might not favor the harrased, in which case, he/she needs to find someone on the side of management to seek advice regarding the situation. He/She needs to always document everything he/she can, just in case he/she needs a lawyer - in which case, you need to just be there to provide the drinks as his/her headache will be increasing (lawyers make things worse before they make them better ;))

As you are a third party and a witness for the victim, why don't you checkout your industrial laws and see if they cover this type of abuse? They probably will! Also have a quite word with the manager or boss, and see if he can put an end to it for her. You would sure be appreciated by the victim if you did! I know I would! You have a really nice day!

If your place of employment has an HR department you should advise your co-worker to document what is happening to them, dates, times and incident and report it. Or you could report what you have witnessed to HR yourself. If you or your co-worker do not feel comfortable going to HR, as is sometimes the case, then call someone at the EEOC. They will take your information and investigate.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is stand up for yourself in times. Most people don't because they fear losing companionship or being isolated by others for standing up. If anything, they should respect you for standing up for yourself, if not they are not good friends / companions to have around.

This is why it is always good for standing up for others. Some people do not have the courage to stand up for themselves, so those who are stronger need to protect the less strong. Stand up for those around you. People shouldn't be harrassed.

If you witness harassment at work, it is your responsibility to report it even if it isn't happening to you. You are witnessing a crime and if you have ever attended a "sexual harassment class" then you know. They always tell you to report it.
