I am curious why speakers and headphones are marked left and right. Does it really make a difference? I've put my left ear bud in my right ear, and vice versa, and I didn't notice a difference.

It depends on what you are listening to. If you're listening to stereo music that's not too complicated in its recording, you probably wouldn't notice.

If you have songs that involve panning from left to right, you would notice more, and especially if you were listening to a DVD movie, where background noise matches the film. Or if someone on the right was talking it would be louder on the right side and vice versa.

Because the artist involved has a certain idea for their music, and they want certain instruments and sounds in certain places., and that is the way they want it heard.
