they're eye boogers. your eyes secrete fluid when you sleep, then you wake up all crusty when they dry out

mucal deposits from your tearducts. When you hit Random Eye Movement (REM) Sleep your eyes are constantly moving which stimulates the tearducts and the build up solidifies. The same thing with boogers.
