I am 6 foot 4 inches, weigh 170 pounds, and would like to purchase a bike, but don't know what I should get. I prefer the look of a crotch-rocket, but I am not sure that there is one out there that is going to be long enough for me, yet not have to much power. I also am on a limited budget.

Have you looked at the sportier touring bikes like the Katana and Interceptor?

I'm 6'2" and have a GS500F - it fits me pretty well. You might want to get some bar risers to make it fit you a bit better, but your legs might start feeling a bit folded up after an hour and a half riding it. It does, however, have that sportbike styling without being too dangerous.

Another possibility is a 650 cc dual sport - basically a large, street legal dirt bike. These fit big guys very well, and have reasonable power without getting out of hand. Something like a Kawasaki KLR650 might be perfect for you.

I concur with the 750cc range. The Honda Nighthawk is a good starter bike. Not too powerful yet still fun. The rider course from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is invaluable. Take it as soon as you are able, it will prevent a great deal of pain. Above all use a DOT(SNELL) approved full face helmet. 64% of all riders thrown from their bikes during an accident land face first. "Keep the Shiny Side Up!"

Jello,
will you take advice from a long time bike rider?
a good starter is any used motorcycle with 500 cc to 750 cc. more than enough power to get you destroyed. anything else is ego or vanity driven. you can get them for reasonable price, do pay cash . nothing like payments on a depreciating vehicle.
learn about maintenance of the bike. for your safety.
suggest you go to motorcycle safety course even if you got to go out of town.
buy a quality helmet and use it.
cause there are two types of motorcycle riders -
those who have crashed and those who will crash.
a helmet makes a difference everytime.
should you decide against a helmet sign the body parts donor form on your license

Im going to have to disagree with the other guys... 750cc is way too much for a beginner to handle imo... i would say 500 or less, and most of my friends go as far as to try on a 250 for a few months... i was recommended the ninja 250, ex500, fzr, or older f3/f4.

remember, your probably going to drop the bike, or crash it within the first 6 months, if you have ZERO riding experience. it would be almost impossible not to at very least lay down your first bike in the first few months. thus, start with something light, and easy to pick up... when your confidence builds, go ahead and move up to a nicer bike...

i would definately not recommend the r6, r1. both have very aggressive seating positions, and also have steering that is a little more difficult to handle around town and in slower speeds. the new gsxr600 is pretty user friendly, as is the f4i.

Suzuki GS500F. The seat is a bit lower than most sport bikes, so you wont be up so high(since you're quite tall). Perfect beginner bike.

Well, hard to say, but for the money and in terms of reliablilty, and older 750 honda is a good bet... easy to handle, easy on gas, and they are relatively inexpensive... Good Luck...

try a bike made by Honda, they have good bikes for beginners, do not get a Ducati if you are a beginner
