First of all, when you finish it, before doing anything else-- mail it to yourself in a certified envelop. That's when you take it to the post office and have them certify it. Then you have to sign for it when it arrives, but don't open it!!! This way, if you start sending it out to publishers, nobody can steal your ideas because you have proof with a date on it that it is your work. Then you can either just send it out to random publishers or get a literary agent to find a publisher for it. You'll probably have better luck the second way. Granted, you will have to pay the agent after some publisher buys it, they don't get paid until you do. Which means they will work very hard to find the highest paying publishing company. And agents really know their way around the bizz. And if you finish it tomorrow, don't wait until you're older-- there are no age limits to when you can publish a book.

Make sure you EDIT it!!! A lot of people make the mistake that if they write one draft of their book than they are done. This is NOT true. True writing happens in rewrites.

To get a good feel of whether or not your book is something that is ready for publication have someone, like an English teacher, read it. Prepare yourself for criticism. No books get through publication without critiques, and even after publication your work will be judged and critisized.

After you feel you have a solid draft go to Writers Market, which is available in book and online at www.writersmarket.com, and find an agent that represents the genre of your book. Make sure that you are sending your book to someone that actually represents your genre or else you are just wasting your time.

Once you find some agents you think fit you, write a query letter (you can find helps for these online) and send in ONLY what the agent requested. (Keep in mind that real agents do not get paid unless you do, so DO NOT send your manuscript with any money for a reading fee)

Since you are young you should really get an agent. It is hard for adults to get published without one, but practically impossible for young adults/children.

You do have youth on your side, which is a bonus. Selling books is hard to do with thousands of books being published every year, and I hate to say it but it helps if you have a gimic. I doubt that Christopher Paolini would have sold as many copies of his books if he hadn't been published at the age of 15.

One last tip. Rejection and criticism come with trying to get published. If you truly believe that your book has great potential, then stick with it. Keep in mind that Dr. Suess was rejected 42 times before someone bought "And To Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street". So even though it can be hard, stay the course.

Good Luck to you!

First off whatever you do if some random persons says they want to buy and publish your book, listen hear, ...DONT SELL IT!!!! It seems that simple but it is complete not. I have been writing since I was seven. Stories, poems, songs. I had some one come up to me and ask me to sell a song to them(by the way writing pieces are under the same legal thing) so i asked a family member who is in a band, and he gave me advicie about publishing that apply to all writing.

1. you have to get it copyrighted, to your name.Thast the most imporant thing. you go to some web site, i forget which just go to ask jeeves amd type in copyrighting thing.....
Its gonna cost money i think like 20- 25 bucks. but if you dont want it stolen do that
2. there are many ways that you can get it published,
an agenices
sending your story to a compain which does not always mean youll get it published.
3. a writing magazine to take a short part of your book and put it in there and see if anyones interetsed.

Theres a book i need to finish reading called "How to Write and Publish a Novel"
I know obvious but it really does help it gives a play by play from writing, characters, to publish and print.

I want to dispell a myth here...

The little art of mailing yourself a copy of your manuscript does not mean that it is copywrite protected. Courts had to make a determination of what constitutes copywritten material. The fact that you did not register a copywrite number with anyone means that another person did not have reasonable access to know that they have written something like you did. If you bring that envelope into court, you WILL lose.

Now for the question above, it depends on how old you are, your audience, and what type of publishing you wish to market to. If your book is better for a certain market, then that's the market you need to start sending out quarry letters to. Send the letters to agents, not a publishing house. If you are too young to sign without an adult, then I'm sure a parent of yours will be happy to do so.
