My daughter and I saw this entire street of homes that were decorated from the fake snow covered grass, ferris wheels, all kinds of animals and big blow up things, tons & tons of lights, elves, santas, you name it, they had it on their lawns - I think it's rediculous- what do you think? how do we explain this to our kids if were trying to teach them what Christmas is really about?

why does someone else's decorated yard affect your children's view of Christmas?

how does that take away from celebrating the birth of Christ? they are celebrating by decorating their yards. it takes a lot of time, effort, and money...what other special time of the year do they do this for? just christmas around here.

i think it lets the children know how special Christmas really is. Everyone is so excited, decorating with their families, it is just a great time...kids need these memories of going around and looking at tacky Christmas decorations!

now, luckily my development does not have any of these over the top decorators BUT all of my close family have nearby neighbors that have went all out! they do not let a space go undone! it is just so funny to see.

i have a VERY conservative uncle who is SO frugal but he doesn't have a need to be, he is a Judge and my Aunt has a great job as well. well, his neighbors have more lights than i have ever seen. we took a long extension cord and plugged it into his outside outlet and led it across the yard and into the woods toward their house. when he went out to feed the dog he spotted this wire FINALLY and the look on his face was priceless...he started to follow that cord - almost running towards their house and when he reached the end and realized it didn't go anywhere i thought he would never stop laughing.

so, moral of the story - if you have these type of neighbors be sure you aren't helping to fund their display!

have a merry christmas! oh, and check out: www.uglychristmaslights.com. they have some really funny hosues on there, with captions! ha ha ha ha.

I think it's nice that some people really get into the spirit,if I had a house not an apartment, I'd go all out on decorations. I take my kids out to see the neighborhood decorations but at the same time try to explain to them why we are celebrating Xmas

mwahaha... I love my yard... Its eveil like that. We have a local unoffical comp. between firemen to see who can compleatly out do one eachother and the cheifs decide on the night we take the fire trucks around town with santa playing chrsitmas music. Its all fun and games, although the winner gets hosed down in a santa suit...

p.s.
The real christmas is gone anyways. Its all commercialized anyways, which is the only reason i celebrate. Im not relagious at all in any sense, and thats one of those holdays that big business got ahold of and soon itlll be like valentines day and no one will ever know there was a higher meaning behind it.

People express themselves in different ways. I'll bet they really enjoy doing all that stuff. Besides, they are the ones paying for it and some people even take donations for the local food banks.
As a kid, that's what we did for entertainment, drive around looking at the light displays.
You can still teach your kids what Christmas is about and teach them about how different people are. Just cause it's different, doesn't mean it's wrong.
Merry Christmas!

Well I personally like them and here is somthing to think about: you need to think about this yourself, the reason people do it is not only because they love the season, they know that others will come by and that these displays give JOY TO OTHERS. I do believe that is the reason for the season! So tell your daughter that!

Also for your information with some people it is a TRA-DITION to drive around and look at the lights.

It is what Christmas is about! Going to see the decorations with your kids who will be amazed is spending quality fun time together. It should be a very nice and pleasant experience that is not on your account.

The decorations sound beautiful. A once a year thing. Why not just enjoy them instead of criticizing those that want to show their Christmas spirit?

My mother told me what Christmas was really about from a very young age, but that did not stop us from enjoying the happiness and enthusiasm that comes with the season. Lighten up, I wish I knew where that street was.

I love it when I see that some one has tried to bring cheer to the people that pass by, To me a dark house at Christmas looks very lonely and feels cheerless.. to me the lights are like a guiding light

I actually like those overly-decorated yards - and I otherwise have a very conservative style!! Talk to your kids about the true meaning of Christmas, those crazy yards do not have to detract from it; from my perspective they enhance it! I see them as a joyful expression of this festive season!!
