Johann Strauss's "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" waltz was used memorably in the space-shuttle sequences, climaxing in the docking scene.

The Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss is played during the striking space wheel scene.
Also Sprach Zarathustra is the big, strong, slow, dramatic music that is played toward the beginning, I think, when the monolith first appears and the apes go nuts.

There was a lot of classical music in there.
Non-Original Music by:
Aram Khachaturyan (from "Ballet Suite Gayaneh")
^ This is the prissy cliched ballet music
György Ligeti (from "Lux Aeterna", "Atmosphères", "Adventures" and "Requiem for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs, and Orchestra")
^ Several different pieces, probably not these.
Johann Strauss (waltz "An der schönen, blauen Donau")
^ Not sure what scene that is....
Richard Strauss (from "Also sprach Zarathustra")
^ *This* is the duuuun Duuuuuun DUUUUUUN..... *DUN DUN*!!! Probably what you're looking for.

You are no doubt referring to Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra". The opening of which was used in 2001 - A Space Odyssey
