Did the American forces use lethal gas in the war?

Yes, all major combatants Italy, Russia, Turkey as well as those you mention used gas. The first recorded use was not in the West though, it was in fact on the Russian front, in early 1915. It was not outlawed until after WW1.
Tactically, it came into use because high-explosive shells didn't have the explosive power to destroy enemy fortifications, in late 1914-1915. Gas affected troops whether in trenches/dugouts or not. Later, after both sides developed countermeasures, it was used to discomfit the enemy-force him to mask, etc which tires him out. In fact that's the primary military use of gases today-it's a lousy killer against anyone who's prepared, but it does reduce efficiency...

Sorry but both of you got it wrong, its not lethal gas (that is used for execution) but its Mustard Gas
