While not actually "true," I believe the kidnapping of Virginia Piper in 1972 influenced the Coen brothers.

No. The Cohen brothers just threw that in there to try and grab your attention a bit more so that, as you're watching it, you're thinking, "Wow, did that really happen?" They say this on one of the extras on the DVD.
