Visit a bank and figure out how much of a mortgage you qualify for. Then shop for houses in that price range. You don't have to be rich to own your own abode - many areas across the country have places starting at as little as $50,000. They may be a dump, or a condo, but you can live there and call it home.

You need to save to get the downpayment, this takes years for the rest of us who are not rich. Downpayments are huge! You need to save up %20 I think to get a decent home owners loan. You also need to keep your credit rating high so that when you get a loan for the house, you get a good interest rate.

I have worked since I was 13 (partime through school). made sure I worked every paid holiday even xmas...now at 33 I own a mortgage free house. Now I can relax.
