You did not really ask what the first animated cartoon character was, you asked what the first cartoon character was.

The first credited cartoon character was The Yellow Kid by Richard Outcault in what is considered the first comic strip "Hogan's Alley". (although, technically "Hogan's Alley" was not really a comic strip as it was one large panel.) It was published in the newspaper "New York World around 1895.

Yellow Kid is considered the first cartoon, or comic character because he was the first character repeated in a regularly published feature. There were even some very early short animated films of him (though they was not the first animated cartoons.)

The Yellow Kid was very popular and was heavily marketed. It was because of the popularity of the Yellow Kid that other newspapers started running their own features with regular characters which lead to the comic strip and the comic section in the newspaper. Richard Outcault had started a new art form. Later when animated cartoons came out they used the same basic art style of the newspaper comics so popular at the time.

So, if your question is what was the first animated character then Richard is correct. But, if you meant the very first cartoon or comic character, then it was Yellow Kid.

Vydeo is correct - the very FIRST CARTOON character was indeed Gertie the Dinosaur. And there were other cartoons before Steamboat Willie, a.k.a. Mickey Mouse - too many people here either don't know their history, or don't remember it well.

I'm going to go with 'Gertie the Dinosaur", created in 1914 by Winsor McCay (who also created Little Nemo in Slumberland). "Steamboat Willie" (featuring Mickey Mouse) was the first cartoon with sound. Other early cartoon characters were Felix the Cat, Koko the Clown and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (all preceding Mickey Mouse).

Historically and technically, the first animated film was Humorous Phases of Funny Faces (1906) by newspaper cartoonist J. Stuart Blackton, one of the co-founders of the Vitagraph Company.
Animator and sketch artist Winsor McCay produced a string of comic strips in the early 1900s. His first animation attempt used the popular characters from his comic strip (and became part of his own vaudeville act): Little Nemo in Slumberland (1911) (with 4,000 hand-drawn frames), followed by How a Mosquito Operates (1912) (with 6,000 frames).
His first prominent, successful and realistic cartoon character or star was a brontosaurus named Gertie in Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) (with 10,000 drawings, backgrounds included), again presented as part of his act. Some consider it the first successful, fully animated cartoon - it premiered in February 1914 at the Palace Theatre in Chicago.
