It's short for exponent. It means "times ten to the..." See, originally the number would have been written 48,000,000,000 years, but then they decided that took too long to write. So they started using scientific notation, writing it 4.8 * 10^10 years. Then calculators came along, and they couldn't handle exponents, so they wrote it 4.8 E10 years instead.

When you see a number followed by E(x), and you want to get it back into numerical form, write it down with a bunch of zeroes after it, then move the decimal point x digits to the right. If x is negative, put the zeroes before the number and move it to the left instead.

E means x 10 to a certain power.

x E y years means x times 10 to the y power.

4.8E10 means 4.8 x 10^10. It's very large.

E on the calculator and computer is its way of showing scientific notation so 4.8E10 means 4.8 x10^10 (10 to the power of 10)

That's a calculator's way of writing 4.8 x 10^10. E just stands for x 10^ (i.e. times ten to the power of).

It is a convenient notation for powers of ten. 4.8E10 is equvalent to 4.8 x 10^10. The convention dates back to an old programming language called Fortran.

E stands for "so-and-so power of 10"
In your example,
