I've always been interested in doing ballet. I know that I can probably handle it because I'm an ex gymnast. I think I already know what I need to wear but If I'm correct then I need to know where to get it. I appreciate all of your answers, and thank you for taking the time to help me. PS- I need to know soon... my lessons start in 1 week

I heard that you're supposed to wear a thong.... is there any truth in this?

I commend you on wanting to try ballet! There are never enough guys there, since most guys think it's too gay :( .

You are supposed to wear a dance belt, which is in many ways a thong for guys. I doubt it is very comfortable. I would not recommend ordering from Dance Distributers (another commenter had mentioned them) as they usually take a while to get your stuff to you. I order from Discount Dance Supply, as they usually are extremely fast (I typically get my stuff in just a few days). http://www.discountdance.com/frame_set.php3?mf=/dancewear/page_MEN_p1.html

For class you can wear a pair of gym shorts (black) over your tights. If shorts are not allowed, just about anything that will keep your "package" supported and tucked neatly without outlining everything. For performances, you must wear a dance belt - there are many styles including thongs which aesthetically look the best because they have no visible line under the tights.

I am not sure how fast the delivery service will be for the website, www.dancedistributor.com. Their site offers the Dance Belt by Capezio company. If you live in a metropolitan area that has dance supply businesses, you could try the Yellow Pages section listing for "Dance Apparel, Costumes or Dancewear". Under the general directory heading for Dance, there may be listings for Ballet Suppliers.

It's called a "dance belt". It's kind of like a really tight (and uncomfortable) jock strap.

A dance supply store will have them. When I took ballet, some of the guys wore gym shorts OVER their tights, which seemed to be OK with the teacher. You might ask.

Go to a dance supply store, look them up in the phone book under "dance supplies".
Men's dance belts come in several styles some are thongs and some are not.

Well, we have a really big, really profesionaly dance department at my school. And under their tights guys either where a "Dance gard" (male thong), or nothing. Same thing with the girls, a thong or nothing

Go to the ballet stores and find what you need. Even athletic supply stores should carry them.
Go back to your gym and get what you need.

Proud of you.
