Which processor would be faster for my system? I have read that Core 2 Duo is generally faster then Pentium D but I would like to know if that is true in this specific case. If I were to spend the same amount of money, I would either get the Core 2 Duo processor with 1 GB of RAM or the Pentium D processor with 2GB of RAM. Which would be better? Please help me decide. Thanks.

The OS I would have would be Windows XP Professional. My general tasks would be Internet browsing, Office applications, downloading from a BitTorrent client, burning data to DVDs, maybe some video conversion if I get a new iPod, things of that nature. Not much into gaming.

Simply, Core 2 duo without a question. It has 2 cores.
Considering the memory, though, if you tend to run many programs at the same time but are only doing things that use a lot of processor (like movie editing) in one, the Pentium D with 2GB of memory. Otherwise, the Core 2 duo can run 2 processor-hungry programs at the same time, but the 1GB of memory will prevent you from having a lot of applications open. I would definitely recommend the Core 2 Duo though, because it is much easier to add more memory later than it is to replace the processor.

With the additional information you just added, I strongly suggest the Core 2 Duo.

The Core 2 Duo will be faster at calulations. If you are actually using more than 1GB of RAM then you may end up being better off with the Pentium D with 2GB. It really depends on the data you work on. Maybe you should watch performance monitor for a while and see if your memory usage goes above 1GB and how much page file is being used to see which is best.

If it were me, I would probably get the Core 2 Duo with 1GB, and then save a little and go to 2 gig in a few months.

To the clueless responding on here. The Pentium D IS A DUAL CORE processor; the "D" stands for dual core. The difference between the two are that they're two different generations of processors with different architectures, plus the Core 2 is also 64bit capable. The Core 2 Duo is capable of more work per clock cycle than is the Pentium D.

Please don't respond if you don't know what you're talking about...it's just annoying.

This depends on what you are doing with the system. More information would be needed to answer this properly. If your looking for performance gaming/video (single process programs) then the D would be faster, however if your doing things that require multiple programs (server type programs, data crunching, etc) then the Duo core would def serve the purpose. However the increased amount of ram will make the most difference. The more RAM the more you can do at the same time, the more you can load into RAM, the faster your system appears to perform. It truely depends upon the full specs of the computer (hardware/software) and what your plans are with the system. Give some more info and I'll be happy to give you a more detailed answer based upon your specific needs.

Core 2 Duo is a 2 core processor it's like having 2 processes in one. Pentium D is a 1 core processor. Get the Core duo and install XP pro or Vista business. You will be very happy.

First of all, those people who say it matters on what you are doing, they are WRONG. The Core 2 Duo is faster, which means it is faster no matter what you are doing with it. I wanna say that again, the Core 2 Duo is faster, even if you are only using one of the cores, it IS FASTER.

Now when you start talking about the memory, this could be an issue, but you would really have to be running memory intensive applications for the extra RAM to compensate for how much faster the Core 2 Duo is.

Depends on what the system is for.

A general system with mutitasking the duo would be better but a gaming system would be better with the pentium D.
No games can make full use of 2 cores yet

What are you planing on doing with your computer? What apps will you be running the most? I have always compromised a little bit or CPU speed for more RAM. Especially since you will be doubling your RAM. Both chips are good and I really think you will notice a bigger difference with more RAM. Ohh, BTW, what OS will you be running?

Good luck!
