No, not neccessarily. It depends on how well you can make your point. People on here can be open minded and willing to listen to other peoples substantiated and reasoned points of view. There are others however who are completely close minded to any opinions that do not mirror their own. Calm and rational argument will get you a lot further then hostile, confrontational and degrading rhetoric.

People are most likely to give credit to the answer that most reflects their own views or beliefs. Also, often someone on the far right or on the left will ask questions that are baited, such as "How many democrats will be going to Iran to deny the holocaust?" (or something equally as insane), this would be an indication that a Republican is trying to evoke anger from a Democrat. The Democrat will in turn answer in anger and therefore give the asker what he is seeking, but will not get the best answer. It works the other way around also.

In politics, generally, yes. People have made up their minds when they ask, most of the time. But I don't care about getting best answer here. I answer honestly, and if it helps make people think, then good enough. Well, sometimes I joke. But this is one of the few places, where people are not looking for an honest answer, just validation. Unless it is a horrible answer, which just reinforces a shortsighted, stereotype. I really don't like, "conservatives are greedy bigots" or "liberals are stupid traitors." I try to stay away from those questions, but sometimes you just gotta respond to stupid stuff.

yes i get your point, it happens with rating people's answers to.
you can have an answer that is sound in every way, backed by research and common sense, and people will still give it a bad rating.
some folks just don't know how to deal with reality.

And some people come here to make an implied statement with a question rather than actually ask a question.

yea i agree, it does happen a lot. the should give the best answer to people who use the most logic in their answers and that back up what they say that shows what they say has something to stand on

just saying 'oh im prolife, i dont hate babys' should not receive the best answer. it has nothing to back up their reasoning. we cant just assume that anyone that has an abortion or who says its ok for some people to have an abortion all hate babys. im not saying that prolife is not the answers, thats not the point, the point is that they should provide more information to support their reasoning. those people are the people who should receive the best answer.

(wink wink, look at my answer wink wink)

No it happens. People generally dont come here looking for someone to change their mind only to validate their beliefs. I do it myself most of the time, although I find the more time I spend here the more I can understand others points of views and give them best answer ( yes even the conservatives). I might not agree with it, but they made the best point. If I truly can't decide I just go with whoever got the most thumbs up.

Answering is a choice. It is either you agree or denounce the questioner. Just answer what you feel is right. Sometimes, you answer with sympathy to the questioner or stand by what you feel is right. The right answer for you is, just do it according to your view.

No you don't have to agree, and yes, you are rambling. Do I win?

No. I have some damn good answers that I don't agree with. As long as they are not bigoted or hateful and are based in fact, I will thumbs up an answer. (I am only speaking for myself.)
