There's really no way to prevent it, as the bra wears out, the wires will begin to poke through. Some things you can try are:

Get a professional fitting. If the wire of a new bra is poking you, then you've probably got the wrong size. This is a very common issue, your breast and body change over time, and bra sizes differ for each manufacture. A profession fitting will make sure you are getting the correct size.

Buy a better bra, cheap bras are exactly that, cheap. They are made of cheap material and will wear out a lot faster than a more expansive bra from a well established maker.

Wash by hand! Nothing will kill a bra faster than machine washing & drying. If hand washing is not an option, you can get a 'bra bag' to help protect them in the washer. You can you a pair of nylons, or your husbands socks as a bra bag as well. This will keep the bra together so that the band or straps do not get stuck on something and get stretched out.

Look for a 'no-poke' underwire. Bali has one and I think Olga does as well. Instead of just a piece of cut wire ending near the top of the bust, like in a regualr bra, the wire is slightly curled outward, away from the breast, and it has a smoot rounded end.

First of all you need to be professionally fitted by a Bra Specialist because you may be wearing the wrong size bra. There is a company that does free fittings and it is called Essential Bodywear. Their website is www.essentialbodywear.com
It is a home based business and you will have to find a consultant in your area.

I learned that I was wearing a bra that was 2 sizes too small for me and the cup size was also too small. That is why I was experiencing the underwire breaking and poking me in my side.
It was the best investment that I ever made. Their bras are so well constructed and if you take care of them properly they will last. I have to admit that they are a little pricey, but it was worth every penny.

Anyway, I really hope that helps.

Hand washing your bra and letting it air dry is the best way to keep that pesky wire intact. However, the life span of a bra is only 3 months, sad huh, so your best bet is to replace your bra's at the first sign of them losing form. If you cannot financially buy bra's every 3 months like the majority of people, handwashing the bra can make it last longer then average. Also, the quality of your bra and #1 is the fit, can make it last longer. Over 80 % of women wear the wrong size bra, so make sure your fitted by a specialist. I suggest Victoria's Secret (even if you don't buy their bra's), they are specially trained for fittings. Good luck!

Ok, I am a dude but I do all the laundry in my house and wash the wife's bras. It is definately the care of the bra and the craftmanship involved. I think Victoria's Secret bras all wash quite well in the washer, on delicate with Woolite, cold cycle, with other delicates. In lingerie bags of course. Line drying is a must. VS stuff is pretty well made. I am surprised at the new Angels and Very Sexy panties that are so unbelieveably thin but wash so well and barely show wear after several washings.

You probably are not wearing the correct size and style bra. Go to a good bra store and be properly measured. You really should not notice the underwire at all.

Wash the bra on the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag - that'll keep it in place and prevent the fabric from wearing down too much.

If the bra does it when it's new, it's cheap or doesn't fit properly.

Make sure the bra is the right size if the bra is too small then it is going to dig into you.

Good Luck

no real way to prevent it.. its just normal wear that causes it. Unless you machine wash your bras, which you should never do... theres really nothing you can do to prevent it
