my daughter is twelve years old and about to enter high school, unfortunately, she is reading at three years below her year level.
her reading has been a problem from the early years, she shifted schools in the ACT during her years 3 and 4, missing out on the intensive learning support the gov. had supplied, as the school she was moved to had done the program the year before.
the years that followed were put in the to hard basket as she didn't meet the criterier.
are there any programs available that are not going to cost a fortune?
please help me address this issue and help her through her learning years!!!

Check with your local library and see if they offer literacy tutors. Ours has an adult literacy program that works with adults who have trouble or cannot read.

When I was younger I had problems reading, so my mom got me Hooked on Phonics, and I have been reading great since then. It that doesn't work, encourage your child to read things that are interesting to her. If she begins to stumble don't help, encourage her to sound it out, and eventually she will be reading like a pro. During the sound it out stage she may become a little upset. Just remember to support her and tell her she can do it. Another thing is to find out her reading level and provide a challenge for her. Improving spelling and grammar skills will also get her on her way to becoming a better reader.

If she is reading so far below level, have you asked to have her evaluated by the child study team? The school system she is in is responsible for giving her a proper, appropriate education. There might be other issues going on that hinder her in reading.

You could ask your child's teacher if she could recommend a tutor who is willing to work with your budget.

It is hard to remediate reading in a situation like this because it's hard to tell if her problem is basic decoding phonics, or is it comprehension issues, or a bit of both.
