go to home depot and get this list : mesh tape, 4 inch plastic mud knife, and drywall mud. the mesh tape is sticky so run that down the ceiling on top of the crack. now comes to practice makes perfect. use your knife and coat the tape pulling it down until you cover the whole crack line. try to make it somewhat smooth. usually go back over and try and smooth it out as needed.

Get some white caulking and push it into the crack then lightly sand. The caulking remains flexable so it moves with the house so there is less chance of having to fix it again. White toothpaste works is you have no money.

there are various reasons for crack formation if it is due to stress/fatigue/fretting/thermal/top layer crack (ie if it is for few mm and it is not growing or widening) then coatings like epoxy or polyurethane will take care if it is due to structural defects or sinking then specilist should come to assess and give the solution generally under such circumstances for sinking crack silicone gel is used and topped with fine sand for structural defects it can be rectified by doing epoxy bangading or concrete stitching depending on the degree of defect.
