Vermin, as a definition, is broad. It really depends on where you live. For instance, in Australia, anything that displaces or endangers wildlife are classed as vermin. We also class pests that invade our house vermin. Most of those like the rats, mice and cockroaches have been introduced to Australia are classed as vermin.
Other animals, such as Asiatic Water Buffalo, pigs, foxes, cats, camels and horses are feral animals that are also declared to be vermin due to damage they do in the wild. They can also carry disease such as foot and mouth disease. One study suggests that if foot and mouth entered Darwin on the northern end of Australia, it would take three months to reach Victoria.
Native animals are sometimes declared vermin, like an overpopulation of Kangaroos and are culled selectively.
One example that sticks in my mind of vermin that was not really vermin is that of a Prairie Dog in the United States. The farmers hated it and tried to wipe it out. But that was at the cost of the Black-footed Ferret which fed on the Prairie Dogs. With the eradication of the Prairie Dogs, the ferret nearly died out. They are safe now, but is also an indication of what vermin can be classed on.

To most people. An animal in the wrong place is vermin, Rats in a barn!
An animal in its natural place isn't vermin! A Rat where there's no farm!
The problem is we move into the Rats territory or encourage them into ours with Rubbish dumps and sewers for example. Then because they are in our way or we dont like their 'natural' behaviour we call them vermin and kill them.
For every 100 Rats destroyed in Lab Testing, 10,000 are destroyed by Pest Control. Makes you wonder where the Animal Rights brigade are then!

Rats
Mice
Hamsters
Rabbits
Chinchillas
Voles
Hedgehogs
Ferrets
Minks
Gerbils
Some birds
Etc

Basically it's any small furry creature. They are considered vermin because as they are so close to the ground they pick up fleas, ticks etc which can all be passed to humans.

Flocks of birds because of the amount of waste they produce which is dangerous to us. And when a bird shakes itself, dried skin comes off and if we breathe that in, that can become quite serious especially to people suffering with asthma.

The majority of vermin are sold as pets. Although I don't know why Chinchillas are in the list because their coat is so thick they don't get fleas.

I have owned several 'vermin' as pets and the title never put me off as I have loved every one of them as have all the other people who buy these pets.

Vermin are usually considered to be a rodent that might infest your home and become a nuisance. I do not dislike rodents at all because of this title. In fact, I used to have about 12 mice as pets at one time and I think quite dearly of them.

Foxes, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, etc anything that has a tail and is squirmy. You can't dislike them all because of that. Some are OK like house pets, but the ones that run wild and spread disease are defo vermin.

Roaches, I despise, if that's technically considered an animal. Also mice and rats because my apartment in Chicago had them and I had to lay down poison and traps to try to exterminate them myself without hiring an exterminator. Also wasps and bees inside your dwelling become vermin, but outside pollinating flowers and trees they are not vermin then.

I suppose vermin are classed as those manky creatures associated with the spread of disease, foxes, rats, cockroaches etc. i don't dislike them but am slightly afraid of them, they get bad press but i suppose they all have thier own purpose. Not sure what that is though!

They do have a bad reputation in western culture but this probably not totally deserved. I know people who keep them as pets and they make very good clean pets. They are sacred in some indian religions and there is some historical research which suggests that they may not have been the main cause of the spread of the Black Death. I have a number of friends in and around Southall and I think you will find that it is only a very few people who put out milk for them and the reason for the high population of rats is the number of eating establishments some of which are not very careful how they dispose of their waste not people putting out saucers of milk
