I was always considered a bit of a voracious reader in school.

I'd more or less annihilated the children's section of the library by the fifth grade, and moved on to Stephen King and John Grisham by the time I was ten or eleven, much to my parents' dismay.

I can't for the life of me remember what the first "difficult" book was... once I started, I never, ever quit. Probably the first book I read that was way above my level was my cousin's Baby-Sitters Club book when I was four or five. She was probably about nine, and had been muddling through it for quite some time, and had more or less given up. I picked it up, and had finished it by that afternoon.

I always got in trouble, too, in school, when the teachers would hand out a book that we were to read together in class... if it wasn't one I'd already read a few years before, I'd go home and finish it that night. Then, when the inevitable test question "What do you think will happen at the end of the book?" would come up, I'd answer it correctly, and I'd get my test back with the comment "QUIT READING AHEAD!" written across the top.

It always rather discouraged me... but it never stopped me. :)

Sorry for the long-winded answer; this brought back quite a few memories.

Depends on what you mean by "difficult"; I read a lot of books that were supposed to be for young adults when I was tiny, but I didn't consider them very difficult.

The first book that I read that I actually considered an "adult" book or a "classic" book, or something that many considered "difficult", was the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. And after that, my story is quite similar--it made me love classics in general, and Mr. Twain, as well!

War and Peace. Cudn't get past the first two pages :(. But if you mean book that I found difficult to complete then out of soooo many it would be Lord of the Flies, the macabre n naked adoloscent violence unleashed by pre pubescent kids is too horrifying for a guy who wishes to start a family in the next few years.

Well, I've been reading since I learned how to, mostly because I caught my Mom in the act of making up stories while pretending to read them to me, but the first difficult book I read was Herman Hesse's "Steppenwolf" when I was about 14, of course I didn't understand a lot of it and was amazed at the amount of booze, drugs and sex in a "respectable" book by a "respectable" author. Read it again at 19 to finally get it.

I don't remember when I first started reading chapter books, but my first "difficult" book would have been Tolkien's "The Hobbit" in either 3rd or 4th grade. I've been addicted to fantasy and sci-fi ever since!
