When you are dividing numbers with the same base (in your case, 2), then you can subtract the exponents.

2^12 / 2^3 = 2^(12-3) = 2^9
Subtracting 3 from 12 equals 9.

This only works if the bases are the same...it would not work, for example if it ws 5^12 divided by 2^3.

"Which" usually implies a choice between options, not an open-ended question. That being said, to divide a^x by a^y, you subtract the exponents, giving a^(x-y). In this case, you're dividing 2^12 by 2^3, so the answer is 2^(12-3), or 2^9.
