Why the hate filled responses, to anything that is different from their thinking, logic, religion, eating behaviors, writing, asking, breathing?
Nowadays it seems less and less people can have an open-minded discussion without someone getting overly agitated, and the other not knowing how the reaction could be so over-thought, over-stated, over-anything.

You got that right! People don't know what the word "opinion" means. I try to say that I'm the Queen of The South, in my opinion, and so many people get jealous and stop to look at what I'm doing, sheesh I was just having fun! But they don't know the meaning of that is either.

P.S. I'm the Queen of the South...lol...I hope you don't get angry ;)

I agree with kar506 about the fact that some think confrontation is fun. But beyond that, Strong opinions can be threatening to some people, especially when they challenge one or more of their own cherished opinions.

I would like to think that any idea can be openly discussed between intelligent people even when they strongly disagree. After all it's just an idea not an action. But I know even this opinion is threatening to some.

You mean why would a gay person be angry if a non-gay person said that their lifestyle was sinful and that they would be tortured eternally for their family life?

Or if an atheist said that in his humble opinion all relgious people are deluded psychopaths like the 9/11 hijackers?

Come on now, some opinions are on the face of them provoke anger. It's always been that way.

I think that it is as simple as people thinking that they are right and that everyone else is wrong. They want so badly to prove that they are right and so they resort to arguing to try to prove a point. I think that there are better ways to prove a point. And in the end if you cannot come to a solution, you can always politely agree to disagree.

The reason people get so hostile in defending their own views is due to the egocentricity of the human race. We all are taught to believe that our own opinions are more important than the opinions of others. And they are~to us.
