Gender is determined at fertilization. Ultrasounds "reveal" a baby's gender when the tech or doctor is able to accurately "see" the developed external genitals of the baby. This can be 16 to 30 weeks depending on the skill of the tech/doctor and the positioning of the baby. Ultrasounds are commonly done and present little or no risk to the developing fetus.

However, genetic diagnostic measures such as amniocentesis and choronic villus sampling (CVS) can determine the baby's gender earlier - however not without risks to the baby.

Amniocentesis is usually carried out about the 16th or 17th week of pregnancy. Amniocentesis is based on the fact that fetal cells are released into the amniotic fluid. By means of a syringe and a long needle, a small amount of amniotic fluid is carefully withdrawn. The cells in the withdrawn fluid are cultured and "grown" and after a few week the results are known.

Chorionic villus sampling can be done as early as the 7th or 8th week of pregnancy. This method is based on the removal of a small piece of tissue from the chorionic villa (a part of the placenta - which generally has the same chromosomal composition as the fetus. Since more tissue is removed than with amniocentesis, the chromosomal analysis may be completed within a day or so.

However, since both of these methods hold some risk of spontaneous abortion of the fetus, an obstetrician is unlikely to perform them simply to determine the gender of the fetus.

16 weeks is pretty early to get a good reading, up until about 18-20 weeks the vulva and lips of the vagina look exactly like the penis and testicals, which are under developed at that point.

But, its generally the other way around, boys are called girls that early on because the penis and testicals havent really separated and grown to have a high enough profile to look different from the female genitilia. Typically its not a girl being called a boy by mistake, although its not impossible.

I had my ultrasound today (20 weeks and 1 day). The tech could easily tell it is a little girl. The earliest I have heard of them being able to accurately determine the gender is around 16 weeks. Before that the baby is too small and the reproductive organs are not defined enough to really be able to tell. If you are going to get another ultrasound, you might want to ask them to double check if you're not sure they're right.

I found out around 17 weeks that I was having a girl but the doctor may schedule a ultra-sound at 20 weeks (5 months) for better results, the organ is more profound.

When you go for your first ultrasound at around 18 weeks yo can tell the sex of the baby. as long as the abby si co-operating and stays still for you. usually they are not wrong with boys either!! So more than likely you are having a boy. I found out when i was 18 weeks

I believe that you can find out between 16 and 20 weeks (4 to 5 months along). Ask your doctor. They will tell you if it is time or not.

Good luck!!

I just had my ultrasound today. I am 20 weeks pregnant. They could see everything they needed to and then some. They could even tell if it was a boy or girl. So 20 weeks is a very good time.

Does that lady have any kids? I found out I was having a boy with this one when I was 14 weeks. When they tell you that you are having a girl that early is when you want to check again at a later date !!!!

Usually you have to wait 5 to 6 months. Sometimes more. But that's usually about the time you can tell.
