It's hard to pin point it. A soldier in 1770 wrote in his journal that some of the troops had played a ball game called base.
1820 a New York Newspaper had an add looking for Base Ball Players.
1845 sept 13 - Alexander Cartwright presents the first set of baseball rules
1845 Sept 23 - the Knickerbocker Base Ball club is formed and Cartwright's rules are adopted.
1845 October 21 - The New York Ball Club and a Brooklyn team face off at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken. New York wins 24-4. A new York Morning News account of the game, discovered at the New York Historical Society by Harvard graduate student Edward L. Widmer, refers to a game played before October 21. Widmer also found information on the October 21 game, as did historian Melvin L. Adelman. An October boxscore also discoved by Adelman.
1845 October 24 - The NY Ball Club meets the Brooklyn team on the grounds of the Star Club, Myrtle Avenue in Brookly. NY wins 37-19
1846 June 19 - At the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, Jew Jersey, the New Yrok Ball Club trounces the Knickerbockers 23-1 in four innings. Some of the sources list the final score as 21-1. Under existing "Cartwright/Knickerbocker" rules, 21 runs or aces win a game. The game is played with nine men on a side on a diamond infield with bases 90 feet apart. Cartwright is the umpire.
Daniel Okrent and Steve Wulf note: "there is some reason to believe that the Knickerbockers lost on purpose to encourage the other team to actively pursue this new sport. For one thing, Cartwright, one of their best players, only served as the umpire."
