Currently, I have Norton but it's about to expire and I'd like to see what else is out there. Ideally, I'd like to protect my laptop from viruses and spyware and all those other nasties out there. Also, since it's a laptop, there's only so much memory I can use for this...Any recommendations? and Why? Thanks!

You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

You'll need a firewall,anti-virus and Antispyware apps. Since you don't have much memory, here's my recommendation (all FREE apps):
FIREWALL : ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown Why? because it's the best.
ANTIVIRUS : there 3 that you should be thinking about Avg,Avast or Avira. I used all 3 at one time or another and i highly recommend Avira. Why? AVG= small footprint but does not catch lot of viruses, Avast= slow and takes up lots of system resources/memory, better virus detection than AVG. Avira= Execellent virus detection and hardly using any resources on your pc http://www.free-av.com/
ANTISPYWARE: use Microsoft Window Defender ( updated automatically)

Try these

AVG - for anti virus
Zonealarm - firewall
Adaware - spyware killer

They are all free and tend to get better reviews than most paid for alternatives

Dont forget to completely remove norton 1st

Get one of the free antivirus proggies. They are just fine. I'm going to update mine I think but I've been using AVG, and have not had any troubles. I've used these for a LONG time and I have not had any troubles with my system. Make sure you UPDATE them once a week, and do scans OFTEN........a few times a week!

Also.....use the following FREE programs and you should be fine.

Zone Alarm
Ad-Aware SE
HiJack This
Spybot Search & Destroy

All the websites are below.
