Macbeth sends Lady Macbeth a letter from his travels. This is the introduction scene to her character. The letter begins..."They met me in the day of success;..." (Act 1, Scene V).

He describes the "weird sisters" and their first prophecy - that he will be Thane of Cawdor and one day, King. She does not know about the other two (Burnham wood coming to Dunsinane and no man of woman born) - in fact, she kills herself before these two prophecies come true.

Her entire speech following the letter gives us a wonderful first glimpse into her ambitious and murderous nature.
