Yes, Directed by Chris Weits (About A Boy) starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig as Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel. An unknown actress named Dakota Blue Richards is playing Lyra Belacqua. It's in production with New Line, who produced the Lord Of The Rings movies.
It's sounding increasingly likely that they are going to balls it all up though, I'm afraid. Some rubbish about the use of God as a character (and a flawed one) in the books being too controversial for the movie version, so there is talk of replacing Heaven and
God with "some kind of governmental institution". Idiots.
BTW the first book was published under two titles - The Golden Compass in the USA and The Northern Lights in the UK, hence the comment about the name change, as they are going with the American title (of course) a'la Sorcerer's Stone v. Philosophers Stone.
