You have a reason to be concerned. Open-mouth breathing could mean that your rat is in the end stage of a respiratory disease. Mycoplasmosis, treated with antibiotics in the early stages, can be kept under control, but never cured. Untreated Myco leads to pnuemonia, which leads to scarred lungs, which leads to the inability to breath, which leads to death. Your ratty sounds like it is in the "inability to breath stage".

You HAVE to take your rat to the vet to save it's life. See if you can make some kind of payment plans as this is an emergency. The vet should give you a 30 day supply of baytril and doxy (antibiotics) if the diagnosis is lung infection. Heart disease may also manifest itself in this type of breathing. That's a different diagnosis and a different treatment. You need to find out which one it is.

In the same way that cats purr, rats brux (grind their teeth). And in the same way that cats purr in delight or distress, your rat is bruxing in distress.

You need to go to the vet, some vet's will do payment plans. So call around and find a vet that will let you pay off the debt.

I myself own 4 rats, rats have a problem with something called 'Myco' which stands for mycoplasma. It causes serious respiratory problems with rats.

Symptoms include wheezing, sneezing, they'll have porphyrin discharge it's red mucous which looks like blood which will come out of the eyes and nose there usually isn't much but you'll see it if you look close.

Myco can never be cured but it can be treated with something called baytril which helps ease the symptoms it's very important to get your rat treated because many rats die from myco.

Of course your rat could easily be sick with something other than myco and the only way you'll find out what's wrong and get it treated is to go the vet.

Your rats life could depend on it. Make sure it goes to the vet.

Rat poison is designed to kill wild rats, so your rat doesn't have a lot possibility till you get it to a vet. I comprehend which could no longer achievable till the morning, so be certain it has a lot of unpolluted water, drink drink drink, and keep a watch on all of it nighttime. Rats contained in the wild which eat poison will locate someplace quiet to die. it truly is harsh i comprehend, yet a vet is the purely right individual. are you able to no longer even ring the emergency vet? they'd be able that would want to help you, with out you having to take the rat to the vets.

Call the vet. Tell the vet you can't afford the visit but you're worried and explain what's going on. A vet with a conscience will put you on a payment plan. If the first one says no, call another. Your animal is in pain and needs your help. Go ahead and call the vet! Now.

Usually if there is a respiratory problem it is best to take it to the vet. If it is any kind of vet like what I live around then they will help you out. Maybe you could work off the debt for the vet bill. Most of the times the vet will understand. Its better to ask them then to let your pet suffer.

Call the vet. Tell them you can't afford a visit, ask if they have any suggestions. Sometimes vets will discount if you are in a bad financial situation, it kind of depends on the vet.
