U have asked to different questions in one. Victims and perpetrators are two different types of people. I'm gonna attempt to answer them both because I'm guilty of both.

I was a victim when my maternal grandfather met me at age nine and called me a "juju lipped monkey". We r Puerto Ricans from birth, he and I, no mixed bloods or races except that my mother and him r White Puerto Ricans and my father is a Black Puerto Rican and I'm caramel colored.

Now as a perpetrator I confess that I was angry with my eldest daughter marrying out of my race with a "juju lipped" Black-American who I adore now and our kids. What goes around comes around. (He never knew it or my daughter)

I didn't teach hatred although I felt it personally and probably showed openly at times or acted indifferent and that is worse than hating being indifferent at least I think so.

I moved from a small farming community to the big city and didn't know anything about racial hate. It was never even a topic growing up, but arriving at the new metropolitan high school i was picked on mercilessly. I was assulted and robbed more than once and always called some form of white slur. I was nothing but polite and always on the receiving end of the insults.

The funny part was, about 10 years later, I walked into a Dollar General with still wearing my military uniform and showing years of weightlifting since high school and ran into one of the worst offenders who picked on me daily. He was wearing a little apron and stocking soap and looked so small and pathetic compared to when he was picking on me. I asked him if he went to that particular school and the year, just to be certain it was him and it was. I asked if he remembered me. He did at first and i asked if he remembered cornering me and picking on me with all his friends every day. He looked so terrified. I just shook my head and smiled, then drove feeling so sorry for him.

Not too long ago, I was waiting in line at a sit-down hamburger/ hot dog type eatery. The sign read, "Please wait to be seated", but no one came to my service. Meanwhile, an African-American couple came in and were seated immediately by the black hostess. When I mentioned to her that I was still waiting, she gave me an attitude and went to the back kitchen. On my way out, I heard a racial slur for white people exit her lips.
