you have to first find the common denominator, which would be 6.....
-3 1/3 + 1/2 = -3 2/6 + 3/6=

now make the mixed number an improper fraction...

-20/6 + 3/6 = (think 20-3, which = 17, since the 20 is more negative, then the answer is negative)

= -17/6 which when turned back into a mixed number is -2 5/6.
