He starts out as the Thane of Glamis, and is awarded Thane of Cawdor following his victory (by the way - there is no actual "opening battle" - the battle is already over and Banquo and Macbeth are on their way home at the beginning of the script. The focus of the opening is Macbeths meeting with the three sisters).
