Check out stories by the Brothers Grimm, which can be a little gruesome in the original, as well as stories by Hans Christian Anderson, which can be very sad.
One tale I like is Tam Lyn which doesn't get told as much.

The 12 Dancing Princesses, Rapunzel, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, The Little Match Girl, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Rose Red, The Juniper Tree, The Princess and the Pea, Rumpelstiltskin, and (my favorite) Vasilissa the Beautiful.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (Known as the Brother Grimm) had a collection Kinder und- something er rather also known as Grimms complete collection. It's well known and they are quite good.

I personally like norse mythology
Specifically there's one myth in which a husband and wife are trying to hide their only son from a giant, and several gods try to help them. Finally Loki, a trickster god, outsmarts the giant and saves the boy. This one always stood out to me because Loki is in many other places painted in a less favorable light.
